"Contemplation in Linen" is a series of paintings that reflects raw, emotional response to grief. But through grief, there is still belief, and as a result there is faith. In an effort to connect with each piece on a deeper level, I hand stretched each painting onto their wooden frames. There are subtle imperfections that hide behind the back of the painting, creating another opportunity for connection between artist and owner.

This exploration produced work that feels both organic and vibrant, and I hope it brings joy to those who are able to view it.

Inspiration:

Our family cabin in Colorado sits across the valley from the Sangre De Cristo mountain range. The front porch views stretch for miles in both directions, and one can't help but be in awe of God's creation.

Every morning, the sunrise produces beautiful hues of pink and blue, contrasted by puffy white clouds that dance around majestic peaks. Below the range, a sea of green is comprised of valleys and rolling hills. It's here, in this place, that I experience the artistry of our maker. 10,000 feet above sea level I find true rest.

This piece is inspired by the "Blood of Christ" mountains, and the subsequent emotions they provoke.

Inspiration:

Affectionately titled "Flaws and All", this piece highlights the small punctures in the top layer of paint with charcoal markings. The punctures represent the flaws we all posses, but often try to hide. In contrast, this painting honors these flaws and reminds us that our lives are a beautiful and whole composition, when we embrace both the good and the bad.

The painting comes into existence at a time in my life when I am embracing imperfections and untimely challenges, learning to appreciate my journey as a flawed person - but a loved child of God none the less.

This abstraction represents the way we were perfectly pieced together in darkness. Every part of us has been designed by a good father in advance. When we experience pain or anxiety inside, it can be easy to forget - so physical reminders like this can bring us back to truth.

Inspiration:

Psalm 65:8 says, "They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs; You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy." For this client and this piece, I was excited to explore the colors of the sky once more. I knew the painting would be going into a new home, paired with other decor of a similar palette, in a neutral space. The assembly of colors is meant to capture and evoke the beautiful setting and rising of the sun on a horizon. 

Hopefully this piece can bring a little bit of joy, even on the cloudiest of days when the sun is hiding. Because His signs are all around us in, and i pray we would allow ourselves to be left in awe.

Grace is a unique concept, our weaknesses traded in for victories. This piece incorporates a contrast in dark tones with vibrant colors to represent a life full of beauty, overshadowing darkness. What man sees as defeat, the Lord sees as opportunity for faith and growth. This piece comes at a perfect time in my life when I am learning about seeing the beauty in defeat, and understanding the picture the Lord wants to paint in the process. The client gave me a great opportunity to explore my inner Pollock once more, and produce an invigorating piece.
